Want one of the best views in Chattanooga without a long hike? Sunset Rock is it. I parked at the top of Lookout Mountain and was standing on the rock in about 10 minutes.

What is Sunset Rock?

Sunset Rock is a big rock ledge high on Lookout Mountain. As the name says, it's famous for sunsets, and it's also a favorite spot for rock climbers.

A little history

Sunset Rock isn't just a pretty view. In late October 1863, during the Civil War, Confederate Generals James Longstreet and Braxton Bragg stood on this rock and planned the attack that led to the Battle of Wauhatchie. A month later, on November 24, 1863, Union troops swept up the northern slopes of Lookout Mountain in what became known as the "Battle Above the Clouds."

Much of that fighting happened around the Cravens House, the same spot where the longer hike starts today. The house was nearly destroyed in the battle and rebuilt by the family after the war. It's now part of the National Park Service's Lookout Mountain Battlefield, so your hike comes with a history lesson built in.

Two ways to get there

The quick way: park at the top

This is what I did. There's a small parking area near the top of the mountain, and the walk to the rock took me about 10 minutes or less. The path is a little rocky, so wear real shoes. Heels are a bad idea here (trust me, I've seen it happen on a date).

The longer hike: start at Cravens House

You can also park at the historic Cravens House and hike up. It's about 1.5 miles each way (3 miles round trip), with a steep set of rock stairs near the end. It's a great hike, but if you're going for the sunset, I'd skip it. Your walk back will be in the dark, and park rangers may close the Cravens House parking gate at dusk.

My tips for Sunset Rock

  • Parking is limited: get there early and bring as few cars as possible. Don't park on the street or in nearby yards.
  • Want it quiet? Go in the morning or the middle of the day. You'll mostly see the occasional hiker or someone climbing the rocks.
  • Going for the sunset? So is everyone else. Arrive early to get a spot.
  • Watch your step: the edge is a sudden, steep drop with no railing.
  • Make a day of it: pair it with Ruby Falls, the underground waterfall inside the same mountain.

Is Sunset Rock worth it?

Absolutely. It's one of the easiest big views you'll get in Chattanooga: a short walk and a huge payoff. Most people come for the sunset, and once you see the view, you'll know why.
